Woodchester Mansion is a unique and amazing Grade I listed Victorian Gothic house hidden in a beautiful Cotswold valley. It is an unfinished masterpiece. Building started about 1857, but stopped in the mid-1860s so floors and ceilings are missing.

The Mansion sits on the site of a much earlier Georgian country house called Spring Park. We do not know when work began on the new house, but by 1866 the clock tower was complete and the roof was in place. Workers mysteriously laid down their tools in early 1868 and never returned. Rumours that they were unsettled by several mysterious deaths and one murder have never been substantiated, but refuse to go away. During the Second World War came Woodchester Mansion became a base for American and Canadian troops. It was during training that several lives were lost when a bridge collapsed, plunging some of the troops into the lake and to a watery grave.

This terrifying location holds many dark secrets which include rituals, black magic, death, sacrifice and even murder. It has a dire history that is sensed as soon as you enter the stone walls of this frightening building.

A phantom horseman has been seen on the mansion’s drive. It is said that the Mansion itself is the epicentre of all the haunting happening in the area. There is the Tall Man of the Chapel which has been seen many times and the elemental in the house’s cellar. There is a floating head which has been seen by many in one of the bathrooms. There is also the spectre of the old woman who likes to attack female visitors by grabbing them in the dark. People have reported hearing a woman singing an Irish folk song in the scullery. The ghost of a young girl has been seen several times playing and running up and down the stairs of the mansion’s first floor.

The haunted reputation of Woodchester Mansion has led it to be featured in several ghostly television programs. It has been featured in Most Haunted in 2003 and again in 2005. It has also been featured in Hauntings and Ghost Hunters International.
